Monica and Rachel lived in an outrageously huge apartment on 495 Grove Street. With its beautiful wooden beam that separated the living room from the kitchen, a giant window, and a balcony to peek at the people living across the street – the apartment was indeed a happy place full of fun and laughter.
In the Season 10 episode, “The One Where Chandler Gets Caught”, it is revealed that Chandler and Monica have made plans to move out of Monica’s apartment and into a house in Westchester County, New York.
Rachel never owned an apartment. For the first 5 seasons, she lives with Monica, then she moves in with Phoebe. When she has to move out because of the fire, she moves in with Joey.
Central Park is in the center of New York. It is a very popular place for both locals and tourists. To “perk” means to percolate (or make) coffee. So a place called “Central Perk” is a play on the name Central Park – the word Perk makes it clear that it is a coffee shop.
Even though the characters were supposed to be living in New York City, the series never shot there. Instead Friends was filmed on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, California—which you can still visit today.

It was possibly because the balcony was an afterthought of the set designers and the wall with the small window had already been made. Alternatively the balcony wasn’t designed for sitting in as after the first season, the balcony is much smaller with only room for someone to stand.
The “New York Street” set between Stages 14 & 15 at CBS Studio Center was this street, and it was used extensively in the show to represent New York City. The interiors of many of the stores in the show were also filmed here. Basically any of the shots of the actors on the street were filmed here.
The pilot episode was filmed in New York City, where the series is set. The rest of the series is filmed in Toronto (at Downsview Park Studios), where the sets are built to be identical to the New York law offices seen in the pilot.
Central Perk Couch

Seriously. Manufactured by Robe Factory and available to purchase from Toynk, the Friends Central Perk Coffee Shop 3-Seat Couch Replica (pictured above) is about 7.5 feet wide and features all of the same details as the couch in the show, down to the fringe across the bottom.
Monica is Ross’s younger sister. She later marries Chandler. For most of the show she works as a chef around New York City. Her best friends are Rachel Green and Phoebe Buffay.
It used to be a bar
In “The One With The Flashback” (Season 3, Episode 6), the audience learned that in 1993, in a maybe real, maybe imagined time before the pilot, Central Perk was actually a bar.
The Citi Habitats’ March 2016 rental report has discovered that the West Village’s average two-bedroom rent is $4,030. With this in mind, it’s safe to say that it would cost over $4,000/month for Monica and Rachel’s place and in the high $3,000s for Chandler and Joey’s.
The first Friends character to arrive at the apartment was Chandler, though that happened before the events of the series began. However, it’s known that Chandler wasn’t living there all by himself, and had a roommate named Kip, who never appeared in the show but was mentioned a couple of times.
After 10 seasons of Friends, it was probably difficult for most fans to picture Monica’s apartment painted any other color than purple. But according to production designer John Shaffner, that unique lilac shade wasn’t always set in stone. … “Until I painted the little model purple.”
