About 50 people live on Sandy Island now, all descended from slaves brought from West Africa to cultivate rice on nearby plantations. The residents are the direct descendants of the Gullah People.
Back in October 2012, an Australian research ship undiscovered the island. The ship, called the Southern Surveyor, was led by Maria Seton, a scientist from the University of Sydney.

Fraser Island
K’gari (Fraser Island) lies just off the east coast of Australia. At 122 km long, it is the largest sand island in the world.

Sugar Loaf is an island located adjacent to Levera Beach (aka Turtle Beach). The island is privately owned and appears to have one house located on the island. As far as I am aware, the public cannot visit the island and there is no transportation available from Levera Beach.
