The Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles downstream from New Orleans, which is about 250 miles from Destin. Being so far from the river’s entrance to the Gulf has helped our water stay crystal clear.
Destin. Destin is commonly referred to as the Florida beach with the clearest water.
Caladesi Island, off the northern end of Clearwater Beach (reached via ferry) deserves its own mention, as it’s similar to the beaches you’d find in the Caribbean. It has turquoise waters fronting sugar-soft white sands, making it one of the prettiest strands in all of Florida.
The water in gulf shores is not quite as clear as destin, But the water is beautiful. Here is a link to a couple of pictures I took in gulf shores of the water. The weather has a lot to do with how clear the water is, If it is stormy, the water is less clear.
As far as which is nicer between Destin and Pensacola, they are pretty similar. Pensacola tends to have a more natural feel though with areas of undeveloped beaches between PCola Beach and Navarre or Ft. Pickens. And also less crowded.
