One thing to know about Cody is that it is about an hour drive to Yellowstone’s East Entrance and then another 50 minutes to Fishing Bridge Visitor Center at Yellowstone Lake. To Old Faithful, it’s almost three hours from Cody.
Outside of Yellowstone National Park, West Yellowstone is the best place to stay, since the driving times to the main sights will be the shortest. The exception is Lamar Valley, which is located near the northeast corner of the park.

Yellowstone lodging is not inexpensive. Roughrider Cabins, the most basic of Yellowstone lodging cost $101 plus tax. That’s for one double bed and no bathroom. On the other end of the spectrum, rooms at the Lake Yellowstone Lodge can cost $550 or more.
Going to Yellowstone alone is considered safe for both men and women. The National Park Service has put in place rules, regulations, and safety measures to keep park visitors safe from wildlife, extreme weather, and other natural dangers.
West Yellowstone, just outside the park, is the best place to stay near Yellowstone. It’s relatively centrally located for exploring all parts of the park. Gardiner just near the North Entrance is another good place to stay for exploring Yellowstone, but it has fewer accommodation options and other facilities.

If you come into West Yellowstone, MT from Idaho Falls, ID, the road passes through some mountains, but again as Kristine said, it’s a truck route, fairly wide and not too scary. The highway from Bozeman MT to West Yellowstone, on the other hand, is winding and narrow, and downright scary in icy weather.
It’s full of restaurants and shops, all with beautiful views of the mountains. In summer, stop in Teton Village for the chance to ride the famous Jackson Hole gondola to the top of the peaks. It’s worth the ticket price to experience an incredible view of the mountains.

Personally, I would choose West Yellowstone, because of the diversity of things to see and do in YNP. You can plan on a day trip or two to Grand Teton during that week. On the other hand, Jackson Hole is more attractive to some people because of the choices of more upscale restaurant and shopping choices.
