San Francisco is overall very safe to travel to. Even though it’s sometimes dangerous, and the number of homeless people and junkies on the streets may make you feel uneasy, the criminal activities that occur only apply to dangerous parts of the city, which are rarely frequented by tourists.
Most visitors find three days in San Francisco is a good amount of time to get a solid introduction to the city. However, if you have a week it’s highly recommended you take a few San Francisco day trips. For example, to the Wine Country or vibrant cities like Oakland and Berkeley, which are across the Bay.
Yosemite is about 170 miles away from San Francisco and about a 4-hour drive. So, we recommend starting your day as early as 5 AM or 6 AM to have full experience in the park.

Don’t Carry Expensive or Unnecessary Items: Make sure to pack light as you travel around SF. It’s more difficult to grab smaller bags and they are easy for you to keep an eye on. Being that San Francisco is a fairly compact city, and it is very difficult to drive around it, our transit system is often very crowded.
Overall, most San Francisco neighborhoods are not dangerous. But if you want to be sure you’re sticking to the safest areas for tourists, Fisherman’s Wharf and Chinatown have low crime rates and are fun to visit too.
LA generally has around 500. So LA has more crime, but SF has more crime per population. So splitting hairs, LA is safer. Go national however, and both cities are Disneyland compared to Elkhart, Indiana, Kansas, MO and San Bernardino….
Where to Stay: For your first time in San Francisco, you’ll want to stay in a centrally located area, preferably in Union Square, the Financial District, or around the Convention Center. Try to stay near Market Street, as public transportation is plentiful here.

San Francisco in Two Days is a Great Trip
As you know, I kinda wish I lived in the Bay Area so I could plan a weekend getaway in San Francisco at least once a month. Personally, I think you can either travel to San Francisco alone or with a group of friends. It’s a great time regardless of your “travel” status.

The trip over to Alcatraz Island is 12-15 minutes each way and is factored into the suggested time of 2 ½ to 3 hours. Tenderloin District
The Tenderloin District of San Francisco has the unfortunate honor of being the worst in the city for both violent crime and property crime. There’s a concentration of seedy residence hotels, and many low income residents, along with a higher incidence of prostitution, drug dealing and drug use.
1.) Crowds, crowds, crowds. Pushy, rude tourists overflow the wharf streets. If you want an intimate or unique experience — this is not the place to go.
The Castro has an average violent crime rate and an above average property crime rate for San Francisco.
